Victim of Nyanya bomb blast dies after second surgery
Ijeoma, wife of Chiamaka Dominic, one of the two victims of the May 1, 2014 bomb blast in Nyanya, Federal Capital Territory, Abuja on Tuesday said her husband died after doctorscomplained that his blood level was too low.
Dominic died on Sunday night at the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital, Gwagwalada, where he had been receiving treatment.
His death came barely two weeks after a surgery was carried out on one of his legs.
The surgery was sponsored by the Women for Change Development Initiative, an NGO owned by the First Lady, Mrs. Patience Jonathan, which paid the N1.4m hospital bill and also gave him some money.
Ijeoma said, “His Packed Cell Volume was 28 and the doctors said he needed four pints of blood. After the surgery that Thursday, he was transferred to the intensive care unit.
“I was told to get him something to eat, after which he had his bath. On Friday morning, he was returned to the ward. By 3pm, on Saturday, his breathing started changing and when I complained to the nurses, they placed him on oxygen.
“By 8pm, he was given one pint of blood out of the four recommended by the doctor. Thedoctors even said he had pneumonia. He died by 12 midnight on Sunday.”
Another source in the hospital who craved anonymity said Dominic would have survived if there had been prompt response to his case.
The source said, “Dominic suffered on hishospital bed for over four months before the intervention of the First Lady. Doctors said he had to wait for at least 10 days to regain his strength and healing before the second surgery could take place.
“By the time the second surgery was done, Dominic was too tired and couldn’t bear it. He was too stressed up and from his breathing when I saw him on Saturday, it was obvious that he won’t survive. If Nigerians had come to his assistance through medical trip overseas, Dominic would have survived.”
The Boko Haram sect had claimed responsibility for the attack, which claimed many lives.
Dominic, a driver from the Ehime-Mbano Local Government Area in Imo State, left behind two children aged three and five, and a pregnant wife.
One of his friends and relatives, Felix Okwudiri, also confirmed the death to ourcorrespondent.
“Yes, Chiamaka Dominic is dead; we are on our way to the hospital, but I am yet to get in touch with his wife,” Okwudiri stated.
The deceased was first admitted at the Accident and Emergency Department of Wuse General Hospital, Abuja, but was transferred to the UATH with another victim, Mrs. Monica Solomon, due to the severity of his injuries.
